Affiliate links — see our affiliate disclosure. Prices and offers change; check the store for the live price before you buy.

Diablo II: Resurrected was built to be played with a controller on PC — native controller support was a headline feature of the Resurrected release, with a dedicated controller interface rather than a mouse emulation layer. If you split your time between playing a character and editing it, the pad you pick affects both halves of that loop.

How these picks were chosen
These picks are based on specifications, platform support and community consensus — not lab testing, and there are no review scores here. We do not claim hands-on test results we did not produce. Use the use-case notes to match a controller to how you actually play.

The reference pad: Xbox Wireless Controller

The Xbox Wireless Controller is the reference controller for PC gaming generally and for D2R on PC in particular: Windows treats it natively, D2R’s controller UI was designed around this layout, and wireless (Bluetooth / Xbox Wireless) and wired USB-C connections are both supported. If you want the pad that simply works with the game’s built-in controller scheme, this is it.

See the Xbox Wireless Controller on Amazon (affiliate link).

The customisable alternative: 8BitDo Ultimate series

The 8BitDo Ultimate series suits players who want extras the reference pad does not emphasise: remappable back buttons on models that offer them, companion software for profiles, and broad multi-platform support if the same pad also serves a Switch or a phone. For D2R, the practical case is comfort and button mapping for long ladder sessions rather than any in-game advantage.

See 8BitDo Ultimate controllers on Amazon (affiliate link). 8BitDo has no direct affiliate programme we use — this route is via Amazon.

If you are already in the Logitech G ecosystem

Players who already run Logitech G mice, keyboards or headsets may prefer to keep their gear, profiles and software in one ecosystem. Logitech G is relevant to a D2R setup mainly through that wider desk setup — many-button G-series mice are the classic choice for skill and potion binds — rather than as a gamepad recommendation in itself.

Browse Logitech G (affiliate placeholder to the Logitech G homepage; check current products and prices there).

Controller vs keyboard and mouse — especially for editors

Playing the game: a controller is a fully supported, comfortable way to play D2R on PC, with the game’s own controller interface.

Inventory-heavy work: keyboard and mouse remain the better tool for dense inventory and stash management, where precise cursor placement across a full grid is constant.

Editing workflows: save editing itself happens on the desktop — in D2CE and in your file manager, renaming, copying and backing up
.d2s
files. For that half of the loop, keyboard and mouse are not a preference but the practical requirement. A common setup is controller for play, keyboard and mouse for editing and stash admin.

Whichever pad you choose, keep the editor habit: back up your save folder before you edit, whichever character you were just playing. See the best ways to back up D2R saves.

Reign of the Warlock DLC: What It Adds, What It Costs, and What It Means for Save Editing

Affiliate links — see our affiliate disclosure. Prices and offers change; check the store for the live price before you buy.

Reign of the Warlock, released 11 February 2026 at $24.99, is the first paid expansion for Diablo II: Resurrected — and its headline addition, the Warlock, is the first new playable class in 25 years. For readers of a save-editing site it matters twice over: it changes what your account holds (more stash, more character slots), and it changed the save file format underneath every editor. This guide covers both, honestly.

What the DLC adds

The Warlock class — a new, eighth playable class, the first new class in 25 years.

+2 stash tabs — two additional shared stash tabs for your account.

+2 character slots — two additional character slots, directly relevant if you keep multiple edited and unedited characters side by side.

Endgame changes — the expansion also overhauled parts of the endgame alongside the new class and storage.

A Diablo IV cross-reward — the Warlock DLC bundles a Diablo IV pet and a back trophy, so D2R players who also play Diablo IV receive a cosmetic reward there as well.

The DLC requires the base game. It is not a standalone release. If you do not own Diablo II: Resurrected yet, the bundle below is usually the cleaner purchase.

What it costs: DLC, Infernal Edition, Game Pass

Reign of the Warlock DLC — $24.99 (requires the base game).

Infernal Edition — $39.99: the base game plus Lord of Destruction content plus the Warlock DLC in one purchase. This edition launched on Steam in February 2026, when D2R arrived on Steam for the first time.

Game Pass: D2R joined Game Pass (Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass) on 12 February 2026 — but only the base game is included. The Warlock DLC is not part of Game Pass, so subscribers who want the Warlock still buy the DLC separately.

Where to buy
Official prices, the Steam and Battle.net options, discount key stores (Loaded and Green Man Gaming) and an honest marketplace note are compared, channel by channel, on our buying guide: prices and where to buy Diablo II: Resurrected. Discount-store offers and prices are checked on the store itself — we never promise a specific D2R price on a key store.

What it means for save editing

The Warlock update moved Diablo II save files to format versions 100–105, adding new structures — including the Chronicle, a DemonSection (v103) and a new 833-byte header (v104). Editors written for the earlier formats have never seen those structures. Blizzard has never published an official patch-to-format mapping, so precise conversion tables elsewhere should be treated as guesswork.

The honest editor status: D2CE (final release 2.22, April 2023, author-tested up to D2R PTR 2.6), the dschu012 editor, Hero Editor and GoMule have no verifiable support for Patch 3.x or Warlock saves. Owning the DLC does not change that, and no Warlock character can currently be edited with D2CE. The full editor-by-editor breakdown lives on the Patch 3.x & Warlock compatibility status page.

What still holds: back up your save folder before any edit, keep your pre-DLC backups (they are the saves the established editors were built for), and treat any download calling itself a “2026 edition” of a classic editor with suspicion — no such official release exists.
