How to Respec a D2R Character: D2CE, Tokens of Absolution and -enablerespec

“Respec” — resetting your attribute and skill points so you can reassign them — has three genuinely different routes in Diablo II: Resurrected, and they are not interchangeable. Two of them are built into the game itself and work on online characters. The third, editing the save file with D2CE, only ever applies to offline characters. This guide lays out all three plainly, so you can pick the one that matches where your character actually lives.

Patch 3.x / Warlock caveat

D2CE’s final release (2.22, April 2023) was author-tested up to D2R PTR 2.6. The current game (Patch 3.x, Reign of the Warlock DLC) writes a newer save format that D2CE was never updated for, and no Warlock character can be edited with it. The steps below apply to saves from the editor’s supported era — see the Patch 3.x & Warlock compatibility status before editing a current-version save.

Back up first

Copy your Saved Games\Diablo II Resurrected folder before you edit. D2CE can also keep a .bak backup per character (Options → Backup Character Before Save). For automatic, versioned backups of the whole folder, see how to back up D2R saves.

Route 1: Respec in game — Akara and the Token of Absolution (online and offline)

Every character gets one free respec per difficulty from Akara in the Rogue Encampment, as the reward for completing the Den of Evil quest in Act 1. Talk to her and choose the respec option: all attribute and skill points are refunded at once. That is three free respecs per character across Normal, Nightmare and Hell — if you have not used them, they are the simplest answer, and they work exactly the same for online and offline characters because they never touch a save file.

Once those are spent, the repeatable in-game route is the Token of Absolution. It is crafted in the Horadric Cube from the four Essences dropped by the act bosses: the Twisted Essence of Suffering (Andariel and Duriel), the Charged Essence of Hatred (Mephisto), the Burning Essence of Terror (Diablo) and the Festering Essence of Destruction (Baal). Transmute one of each, then right-click the token to reset attributes and skills. Farming the essences takes time, but this is also the only repeatable respec route that works for online characters.

Route 2: The -enablerespec command-line flag (offline only)

  1. Add -enablerespec to the game’s launch arguments (in the Battle.net launcher’s game settings, or your Steam launch options).
  2. Launch the game and take your offline character to Akara.
  3. Her respec option is now available without limit — each visit refunds your attribute and skill points again.

Two honest limits: the flag does not work for online characters, whose data never leaves Blizzard’s servers, and it is an in-game respec — it refunds points for you to reassign by playing the menus, rather than typing exact final values. For many players this is the best route of all: no editor, no file handling, and no risk to the save beyond normal play.

Route 3: Direct edits with D2CE (offline saves only)

Where D2CE earns its place is precision: instead of refunding points, you set the final numbers directly. Close the game, back up, load the .d2s file, and then:

  1. Set Strength, Dexterity, Vitality and Energy on the main screen — the full walkthrough is in how to edit character stats. Edited fields turn bold and an asterisk marks unsaved changes.
  2. Open the Skill Trees button and set each skill to its new value, or use the set-all operation as a starting point — see how to edit skills with D2CE.
  3. Save with CTRL-S, then test the character in game before deleting your backup.

This route is offline only, permanently: there is no save file for an online character, and no editor can change that. It also inherits every general limit of save editing — see the Patch 3.x compatibility status for current-version saves, and the unreadable-save guide if the file will not open. Our D2CE user guide covers the editor itself in full.

Which route should you use?

  • Online character: Route 1 only — Akara’s free respecs, then Tokens of Absolution. Anyone selling you an editor for an online character is selling you a fiction.
  • Offline character, occasional respec: Akara or a token first; -enablerespec if you respec often and want it painless.
  • Offline character, exact build testing: D2CE — set the precise stats and skills you want to evaluate, including at level 99 for build testing.
