Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about D2CE, D2R save editing, compatibility and safety — including the questions other sites answer with marketing instead of facts.
What is D2CE?
D2CE (Diablo II Character Editor) is a free, open-source offline save editor for Diablo II: Resurrected and classic Diablo II. It was created by Burton Tsang in 2000-2003 and revived by Walter Couto from 2021. Its final release is version 2.22 (April 2023), published under the GPL-3.0 license on GitHub.
Which game versions does D2CE support?
Its author tested the final release against Diablo II: Resurrected PTR 2.6 (build v1.5.73090) and classic Diablo II v1.14d. It edits the original seven classes. It was never updated for Patch 3.x or the Reign of the Warlock DLC, whose saves use a newer file format.
Does D2CE work with the Warlock class or Patch 3.x saves?
No. The Warlock arrived in February 2026, almost three years after D2CE’s final release. No classic editor — D2CE, the dschu012 editor, Hero Editor or GoMule — has verifiable support for Warlock-era saves. Our compatibility status page tracks the situation.
Can I edit online or Battle.net characters?
No. Online characters are stored on Blizzard’s servers; there is no save file on your PC to open, and offline and online characters cannot be converted into each other. Any tool claiming to edit online characters is not telling the truth.
Can I edit Nintendo Switch, PlayStation or Xbox saves on PC?
No. Console saves are either online characters (server-side) or stored inside the console’s own save system, which a Windows tool cannot read. Cross-progression only syncs online characters between platforms; it does not produce an editable PC file.
Where are Diablo II: Resurrected save files located?
On Windows: C:\Users\
Will using a save editor get my Battle.net account banned?
D2CE only reads and writes local offline files and never connects to Battle.net, and online characters cannot be edited at all. However, Blizzard has never officially endorsed save editors, and its EULA prohibits unauthorised software that alters gameplay. We cannot promise any editor is risk-free: back up your saves and use editors at your own discretion.
Is Hero Editor compatible with Diablo II: Resurrected?
Not directly. The classic Hero Editor (v1.04, for Lord of Destruction 1.14d) cannot natively open D2R save files and cannot create characters from scratch. The documented workaround is to edit a classic-format save and let D2R import it, using the dschu012 converter to move between formats.
Is there an online D2R save editor that needs no download?
Yes: the community editor built on dschu012’s d2s library runs entirely in your browser — your save file is processed locally on your own machine, not uploaded to a server. Our online editor guide walks through it.
How do I know a downloaded editor is the genuine file?
Download from the project’s own channel (for D2CE, its GitHub releases) and compare the file’s MD5 or SHA-256 checksum with the values published there. Our download page prints the verified checksums for D2Editor.exe. Never whitelist or run a file whose checksum does not match.
Is this website the official D2CE site?
No. This is an independent community resource. D2CE belongs to its authors (Burton Tsang and Walter Couto) and lives on GitHub; Diablo II: Resurrected is a Blizzard Entertainment trademark. This site is affiliated with neither.
